July 12 Big Band Reunion w/Michael Drake 7:30 $28 The Fox Valley's own Big Band Reunion owes it's immediately recognizable sound to tight section work and some of the best soloists east of the Manitowoc Ferry. Like a really hip oasis this stalwart 16 piece band has given many a thirsty jazz traveler the needed juice to re-charge the jazz electrolytes. Their two Cds - "Live At Frank's Place" with vocalist Janet Planet and their most recent, "One For Jeannie" are all out excursions into swing. This is the classic big band in the tradition of Basie-Ellington-Herman-Kenton-Lunceford, with a little Mingus, Maynard and Mambo thrown in for good measure. Says band leader Bob Levy... "If you have never heard big band jazz in a small club - be prepared to be swept away by the sheer raw power that this music generates. This is the way it's meant to be heard". Performing with the Big Band Reunion this evening will be trumpeter/vocalist/composer Michael Drake. Growing up on salsa, jazz and funk Drake has been prominent in Milwaukee since the 70s and 80s in the city's active fusion scene but also played with many local Latin musicians. Michael's imaginative writing, playing and entertainment style is a perfect fit with the high energy-good times credo of the BBR. Classic charts, smart original compositions, great singing, and seventeen swinging jazzmen in a small intimate club- what a package! July 19 Marlin McKay / Mike Kubicki - The Music of Horace Silver 7:30 $25 Pianist/composer Horace Silver is possibly among the three most iconic song writers in jazz. Silver's tenure as The Jazz Messenger's first pianist produced a wealth of hard bop tunes that Blakey's group kept in their book for many years. Horace also pioneered the funky, bluesy approach to jazz playing and writing 10 years before it was a genre. Horace Silver's music couldn't get two more dedicated presenters than Mike Kubicki and Marlin McKay. Kubicki - known to have be-bop coursing through his veins is a sympathetic ear - and grounding - for the dozens of Silver's tunes McKay has arranged for small group. Mike's flowing lyrical solo piano lines are matched only by his deft application of jazz rhythms as an important section-mate. Marlin McKay has the fire in the belly of an artist that is going somewhere in a hurry. Citing many trumpet influences, his favorites seem to be those who are known for their beautiful tone and graceful poetic melodies. Marlin's arranging breathes fresh life into classic tunes by one of America's premier jazz writers - Horace Silver. In keeping with his penchant for themes, Rod will mine the fertile ground for the best jazz possibilities of the music of the Beatles. Rod's impeccable taste for the hip, nuanced structure of any song is his forte. His ability to present a song from a different angle is remarkable. Many of the tunes of the Beatles have what every jazz player loves - rich harmonies. This is what an improviser seeks out and in the hands of an expert technician with loads of busting-at-the-seams jazz ideas should yield some surprising artistry. Ike Sturm, now established as one of New Yorks's most accomplished and sought after bassists is a superb accompanist to compliment Blumenau but is also a wonderful melodist able to supply a range of musical ideas to a soloist. Aug 16 Gene Bertoncini Trio 7:30 $25 Gene Bertoncini's distinguished career as an accompanist to singers such as Lena Horne, Tony Bennett and Carmen McCrae, as well as a collaborator with jazz giants Benny Goodman, Wayne Shorter and Chet Baker is well known. He has worked with Lalo Schifrin and Michel Legrand and performed regularly on the Merv Griffin and Johnny Carson shows. But it is his solo work and frequent recordings as a duo and trio that has elevated Gene's artistry to prominence. Gene has established himself as one of the most eloquent masters of the jazz guitar. His spontaneous and tasteful improvisations reflect an intimate affection for classic jazz as well as the rich harmonies and rhythms of the music of Brazil. Listening audiences love his graceful integration of classical, pop, jazz and bossa nova, and guitarists of all stripes flock to his performances to hear and learn his approach to chord voicings. Gene's sidemen this evening will be Ike Sturm - a bassist with an acute sensitivity of the Bertoncini landscape, and percussionist Dane Richeson whose understanding and passion for all things rhythmic is a logical and compatible choice. Aug 23 Dan Trudell / "Who's Your Daddy" organ trio 7:30 $25 B-3 Hammond organist Dan Trudell is all soul. His recognizable sound in the genre of jazz organ trio has just the right amount of grease and intellect. With a strong grounding in the blues and swing Dan harnesses the multiple keyboard possibilities of the B3. He can squeeze out long fluid melodic lines that are unpredictable as well as logical. Taking full advantage of the B3 as a rhythm instrument Trudell will build tension and excitement by employing staccato rhythmic bursts that propel his own solos and give creative ideas to his sidemen. Downbeat Magazine calls Dan Trudell, "The best organ player now working in Chicago." New City says, "Trudell is probably the hippest Hammond honcho you've never heard of." Dan's association with Pat Mallinger and The Sabertooth Organ Quartet established a long time gig at Chicago's famed Green Mill jazz club a venue he still performs at. Dan Trudell and "Who's Your Daddy" features Mike Standal on guitar and Dave Bayles on drums. Sponsored by: Gagne Ford - Princeton8/23 - Bill Steinert at Heidel House Resort - Green Lake

Aug 29 Mulligan Mosaics 13pc big band 7:30 $26 Mulligan Mosaic's leader Ted Hogarth's search for available scores from the Gerry Mulligan Concert Band led him to a partnership with Mulligan's widow to make available to the public this great music. Though a veteran of several big bands it also led Hogarth to form his own big band, assembling top notch players in the Chicago area. While Hogarth could go on for days about why he chose to play Mulligan's music, he said it all boils down to uniqueness. Through nontraditional chord voicing and instrument combinations, Mulligan "...turned the rules of jazz on their head," Hogarth said. Mulligan Mosaics is a thirteen piece big band that swings hard. They have been performing since the summer of 2006 mostly around Chicago and specifically at Fitzgerald's in Berwyn. This music has enormous energy. The writing has a spareness of a quartet but with a lot of rich harmonies and deft interaction between sections. Every soloist fuels the fire and contributes to the solid swing of Mulligan's writing. This is jazz direct from the source. Sponsored by: Bentley Pharmacy - Princeton.
